Okin discusses his early life in Brooklyn, New York, his education at Columbia University, and his various social work projects on the East and West Coasts. He served as the field director of the National Jewish Welfare Board, West Coast, and earned a Ph. D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Okin describes the nature and attitudes of the Seattle Jewish community upon his arrival in the city. He discusses finding a site for the Jewish Community Center and building support for it among the different sectors of the religious community. He describes various programs and fundraisers of the center. Okin also shares his philosophy as director of the center and his view of the purpose of the organization.
